Exercise Tip

Shoveling Snow

As I write this we are getting our first official snow and it looks like I’m going to be doing some shoveling.

This is a FABULOUS way to burn a zillion calories. Do not do it if you have a heart condition (unless approved by your Doctor) because shoveling show gets your heart rate to 85% of it's maximum for light snow and up to 95% of it's maximum for heavy Michigan wet snow. See October's Exercise Tip to calculate your maximum heart rate.

This burns anywhere from 600 to 800 calories per hour! Even if you snow blow some and shovel some, even doing 10-15 minute increments adds up. So if you don’t feel like being tied to the treadmill, shovel some snow for your workout. Remember to bend at your knees and NOT your back. (Don’t we see this every year on the news?)

Have a safe and Happy Holiday season!!!!!!!
