Question: Asked by a female:
Will using a treadmill on an incline make my leg muscles too big?

Answer:
"It is a common misconception that walking or jogging on an incline will build up your legs", says Heather Rider, a Reebok master trainer. "A very small percentage of women may be prone to developing large muscles if they work against HEAVY resistance, however most women don't have enough testosterone for that to happen, and waking uphill typically doesn't offer enough resistance to lead to massive muscles anyway. You may notice tone where there was non before, but this is a good thing. Plus your walking or jogging on an incline will burn more calories because your body has to work harder and recruit more muscles."

Lisa adds:
Also, for calorie burning, every 1% incline increases the calories you burn by 10%. A 150 pound person burns 100 calories a mile; with a 1% grade they burn 110 calories a mile. 2% grade 120 calories etc.
10% grade = 200 calories a mile for a 150 pound person.
Just do a ratio and proportion to figure out how much you burn per mile.
FYI- 175 pounds= 116 per mile
200 pounds 133 per mile
125 pounds = 83 calories per mile
