May 2003 - Nutrition Tip

The Detroit News is doing a weight loss challenge for 2003. 25 groups of 6 members are “competing” with each other to lose weight, decrease cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugars and improve fitness. The program started in January and lasts a year. Each group is assigned a dietitian and a trainer which they meet with at least once a month. Some of the names of the groups are “My Big Fat Greek Family”, “Over 50’s”, and “Food Bank Employees”.

I will be working with “The Retirement Home Employees”, who work at the Grand Court Retirement Facility in Farmington Hills. I just picked up this group last month because their dietitian had a baby and couldn’t fulfill her obligations as much as she wanted to. My group’s trainers are Kirk Vickers (former Wings trainer!) and Jeff Kong of Triad Fitness in Farmington Hills. They were the ones who recommended me to this group. (Networking!)

Today we discussed the reasons why the scale lies (June’s nutrition tip) and how weight training bumps up metabolism (May’s Exercise tip). We also assessed protein needs, calorie needs and balanced their protein and carbs. The meal ideas are calculations are previous tips. I am really looking forward to helping this group become healthy for life.
