MIND MATTERS
Testing Sensory- Specific Satiety

Take that monstorous portion of brownie or any other succulent food of your choice. Cut the food into tiny portions. With paper and pencil by your side, slowly eat each portion. With each bite record the extent of sensory pleasure on a scale of 1 though 5.

5 = ecstasy
4 = good
3 = OK
2 = almost no pleasure
1 = pleasure gone

Note that each bite becomes less irrestible. Stop eating when your rating reaches a "3". I'll bet you eat less than the whole thing.

What's the lesson from this experiment? Eating the whole thing means eating more than what's needed to satiate a craving brain. That's dangerous when the portion is absolutely huge! So, list your "loved" foods that come in huge portions and experiment with the "bite" test.

bite #2                             score _____
bite #3                             score _____
